David de Gea shares emotional message to late relative after win over Leicester City

David De Gea paid tribute to his late grandmother after helping his side secure a third consecutive win in the Premier League, this time against Leicester City.

The Spaniard did brilliantly to keep out James Maddison’s free-kick as United held on for a 1-0 victory at the King Power Stadium.

United’s goal came from Jadon Sancho, whose first-half strike was enough to seal all three points as United climbed to fifth, six points behind pace setters Arsenal.

In terms of individual performances, De Gea produced a solid display between the sticks as he kept yet another clean sheet after an initial poor start to the campaign.

After the won, he took to social media with a special message to his grandmother:

This save and the victory is for you grandma," wrote De Gea on Instagram and Twitter. "Keep watching me flying wherever you are."

Several football stars, including his own teammates like Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho and Raphael Varane took to the comment section to offer support to De Gea.

His long-time friend Juan Mata and international teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga also showed support on social media.

De Gea is one of the long-serving players for United, having joined the Red Devils in 2011 from Atletico Madrid.

He has gone on to make nearly 500 appearances for the club, and aside from Cristiano Ronaldo, he is the only United player who knows what is feels like to win a Premier League title with the club.

United are yet to win any silverware since 2017, when Jose Mourinho was in charge at the club, but they are hoping to change that under Ten Hag.

Their next game is a crunch Premier League classic fixture against league leaders Arsenal.

The 33-year-old became Chelsea owner Todd Boelhy’s seventh summer signing after completing a deal believed to be worth £12.2m.

The last player to wear the Number 9 at Chelsea was Romelu Lukaku, whom , despite making a stunning return to Stamford Bridge last year, failed to live up to his form in the Serie A that saw him help Inter win the Scudetto in 2020/21.
