According to Sportbible, United were not keen to part ways with him at the time, especially considering the impact he had on the team during his spell with the club.

However, a new deal offered to him by the Red Devils had come too late in the day as the Spaniard had already made up his mind about leaving for PSG.

Ander Herrera linked with Athletic Bilbao return

And after close to three years at Parc des Princes, Herrera looks set to quit the French giants after they terminated his contract two years early.

The midfielder's contract with PSG was due to expire in 2024, but the club have resolved to part ways with him as he is considered surplus to requirements.

Herrera's future with the Parisians became more uncertain earlier in the summer after he was excluded from the club's pre-season tour of Japan.

L'Equipe now reports that the 33-year-old is expected to rejoin Athletic Bilbao on a free transfer.
