  • Ex-Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has insisted his former club will need Cristiano Ronaldo amid intense transfer reports linking him away from Old Trafford
  • Despite widespread reports of Ronaldo's wantaway posture, Cleverley contends his former side will struggle without the ex-Juventus hitman
  • Ronaldo notched 24 goals in 37 games across all competitions for Manchester United last season as the Red Devils finished out of the top four positions

Manchester United academy graduate Tom Cleverley has predicted his former club will struggle without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo missed much of United’s pre-season preparations due to ‘family reasons’ but returned for their opening day Premier League loss to Brighton.

The 37-year-old former Juventus forward has widely been linked with a possible exit from the club, barely a year after his sensational return to Old Trafford.

“It’s a difficult one, he’s been an absolute legend at the club,” Cleverley told talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Do I think he helps them get Champions League football? For sure.
“He’s not a number nine that’s going to win you Champions Leagues and leagues anymore but I don’t think that’s where United are at.
“I think he definitely has a big part to play for the club, without his goals they would struggle even more.
“But as far as a long term direction they need to find a different way which is what they’re struggling with at the minute.”

Cristiano Ronaldo sends positive message ahead of Brentford clash

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Manchester United attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a strong message ahead of his side's Premier League clash against Brighton.

Ronaldo is currently staring at an uncertain future with the Red Devils, with reports claiming he is desperate to join a Champions League club this summer.

However, the veteran striker has put much of that speculation behind him as he works his way to full fitness.
