  • RB Leipzig started the game on the front foot and took the lead in the seventh minute thanks to Christopher Nkunku
  • Naouirou Ahamada brought homes side VfB Stuttgart level at the half-hour mark after brilliant build-up play
  • RB Leipzig are hoping to match Bayern Munich this season but dropped points in the first game of the season

VfB Stuttgart came from behind to grab a point against a tough RB Leipzig side. The visitors were out to grab all three points in a bid to match Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, but could not get through a stubborn Stuttgart defence.

Leipzig controlled large parts of the first 20 minutes and got their just rewards in the seventh minute when Christopher Nkunku grabbed the goal after a neat set-up from Dani Olmo.

Nkunku’s goal looked like it would open the floodgates for Leipzig but Olmo blasted two shots over the bar as Die Roten Bulle failed to capitalise on their early possession.

Stuttgart slowly grew into the game and their first real chance came when Silas Katompa Mvumpa shot wide. The Congolese player was adjudged to have fouled Willi Orbán in the build-up and any goal wouldn’t have counted anyway.

RB Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco wasn’t happy with the foul and made his feelings known on the touchline. He was then shown a yellow for his remonstrations.

Stuttgart then levelled matters at the half-hour mark when Naouirou Ahamada produced a brilliant, curled finish to find the bottom corner of the goal. Ahamada and Sasa Kalajdzic combined well in the build-up, putting together a neat spell of one-touch passes to set Ahamada up. The goal was only the second that Stuttgart scored against the visitors in eight and a half games.

Stuttgart were unlucky not to score a second as Konstantinos Mavropanos made a brilliant driving run into the Leipzig before unleashing a powerful shot that smashed against the post and back into play.

Stuttgart came out swinging in the opening minutes of the second half as they looked to build on the momentum. The visitors then took charge of the encounter but couldn't get past Stuttgart’s keeper Florian Müller.

Müller was in fine form as he keep out the constant attacks from Leipzig. Leipzig were relentless in their quest to grab a winner but despite the best efforts of Nkunku, Olmo and substitute, Dominik Szoboszlai, they couldn't find a winner.

Stuttgart were hoping to grab a goal on the counter but Leipzig gave very little of the ball away and defended well when they did.

After six minutes of extra time, the game was finally brought to an end with both teams failing to grab all three points.

RB Leipzig looks to continue undefeated streak against VfB Stuttgart in Bundesliga fixture

VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig will get their respective Bundesliga campaigns underway with an enticing clash at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Stuttgart will be looking for better fortunes after narrowly avoiding being relegated last season. Stuttgart finished ahead of Hertha BSC on points difference, with Hertha having to go through the relegation/ promotion playoff.

Leipzig, on the other hand, finished fourth and were 19 points behind Bayern Munich. Die Roten Bullen did win the DFB-Pokal, though, Sports Brief earlier reported.
