  • Nketiah has been with Arsenal since he was 14, and has grown to be a regular starter in the first team
  • There were concerns the striker would leave the Emirates as his contract ran down in June 2022
  • Arsenal, however, confirmed on Saturday, June 18 that the 22-year-old would be staying with the club after a new five-year deal

Arsenal have confirmed Eddie Nketiah has signed a new deal to remain at the club.

Nketiah, 22, was on the final days of his previous deal, and there were talks that he would follow Alexandre Lacazette in the exit door.

But the Gunners, through the club website, released a statement on Saturday, June 18 confirming Nketiah had put pen to paper in a new contract.

In addition, the young striker has been handed the number 14 jersey, which was left vacant when Aubameyang departed the club.

“Eddie Nketiah is extending his stay with us after agreeing a new long-term contract,” a statement from Arsenal said.

Unlike the likes of Emile-Smith Rowe, Nketiah did not necessarily experience a shooting rise to the Arsenal first team.

His growth was more gradual, as he started with Arsenal at just 14 years.

But his debut was quite memorable, as he notched two goals against Norwich City in 2017.

Last season, he flourished towards the end of the campaign in a subtle show that he deserved a new deal, scoring five goals in his side’s last eight Premier League games.

Speaking on the new deal, Arteta expressed delight, saying as per Metro

“I’m delighted Eddie is staying with us. He represents what we are all about and all the values of the club. We are very happy that he has extended his contract and now we have to get to work and continue to develop the great talent and person that we have in him.”

Despite tying down Nketiah with a new contract, Arsenal are still looking to sign Gabriel Jesus, who is well on his way out of Manchester City.

Arsenal agree deal for FC Porto midfielder

In terms of transfers, Arsenal have also made strides as they agreed a deal for midfielder Fabio Vieira with FC Porto.

Arsenal are now set to pay an initial 35m euros (£29.9m), and the rest will be paid in add-ons.

The 22-year-old was recently voted player of the tournament at the European Under-21 Championship last year and provided a league-high 14 assists for Porto in the league last season.
