Klopp was responding to Manchester United breaking the world transfer record in the summer of 2016 by signing Paul Pogba from Juventus for a fee of £100m after add-ons and agents' costs were taken into account.

What Klopp said about Pogba's move to Man United in 2016

“The day that spending £100m is football, I'm not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together,” Klopp blasted.
He added, “That is how everybody in football understands it. You always want to have the best, but building a group is necessary to be successful.
“If you bring one player in for £100m and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney.
“Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players.
“I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money.”

Six years on and Klopp has now been labelled a hypocrite in a report published by Football Transfer.

Liverpool on the verge of signing Darwin Nunez for a club-record fee of €100m

This is as a result of Liverpool closing in on the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica for a fee that could rise to a club record of €100m.

The Reds have been in long talks with Benfica for the 22-year-old Uruguayan striker as a possible replacement for Sadio Mane who is tipped to leave Anfield in the summer.

Benfica want a €100m overall package for Nunez. They had initially wanted €80m up front and €20m in bonuses, figures with which Liverpool were reluctant to do business, Liverpool Echo reports.

However, Reds sporting director Julian Ward was able to reach a compromise which will see Liverpool spend £64.1m (€75m) in a set fee, with a possible £12.8m (€15m) in appearance-related add-ons and £8.5m (€10m) depending on team success.

It is believed that the overall package for Nunez will almost certainly make him the Reds' most expensive signing and take him above the club-record £75m Liverpool spent to take Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018.

Liverpool also made the biggest Premier League signing of January when they signed Luis Diaz for €60m from Porto.

Should Nunez join the Reds in the summer, Liverpool would have spent €160m on two forwards in 2022 already.

Liverpool Ready to Smash Club Transfer Record for Benfica Striker Darwin Nunez

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Liverpool looks set to beat rivals Manchester United and Spanish La Liga side, Atletico Madrid to signing Uruguayan striker, Darwin Nunez from Benfica this summer.

The Reds, through its Sporting Director, Julian Ward, have started discussions with Benfica for the possible purchase of the 22-year-old striker.

Nunez has caught the attention of top clubs and the world of football as a whole with his top performances last season. He has bagged 32 goals in all competitions.
