  • Many Liverpool players have in the past failed to shine in their new clubs despite being renowned players during their stint at Anfield
  • The list of Liverpool players is now under scrutiny, with another star Sadio Mane now angling for a move away with Bayern Munich interested in him
  • Philippe Coutinho is the latest in that list, having seen his dream move to Barcelona fail to materialize after a high-profile move to Spain

Football transfers have always proven to be a delicate issue over time. Players usually swap clubs with the hopes of getting better salaries and becoming the focal points of their new teams.

Liverpool stars have more often than not failed in their pursuits. The best example is Phillipe Coutinho’s move to Barcelona despite his then-manager Jurgen Klopp advising him against the move.

Coutinho failed to replicate his staggering levels at the Camp Nou and has since been shipped to Aston Villa. The Daily Star looks at the other Liverpool stars who failed to shine at their new clubs.

1. Fernando Torres.

Very few Premier League strikers could rival ‘El Nino’ during his Liverpool days. He even finished as a second-runners up in the 2008 Ballon d’Or vote. Torres scored 72 goals in his first three seasons at Liverpool before Chelsea came for him.

He was sold for a then British record fee of 50 million Sterling Pounds. Torres didn’t live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge, but he will be remembered for scoring the famous Champions League goal against Barcelona.

2. Michael Owen

Owen, a Ballon d’Or winner, will be remembered for his 2001 FA Cup final, where he helped Liverpool win a sixth title. He however forced a move to Real Madrid, where he only lasted for a year after having to contend with playing second fiddle.

3. Georginio Wijnaldum

The Liverpool ace rejected a move to Barcelona in favour of Paris Saint Germain. The Netherlands international found the going tough under Mauricio Pochettino, with most of his appearances coming from the bench.

4. Xherdan Shaqiri

In all fairness, Shaqiri wasn’t a regular at Anfield and decided to try out a new league by signing for Olympique Lyon. He only lasted six months before moving to the Major League Soccer, where he signed a two-year deal with Chicago Fire.

5. Rhian Brewster

The striker was tipped as a proper striker during his formative days in the academy. He shined while on loan at Swansea City. He was expected to go out on loan again but was sold to Sheffield United, where he failed to score in 30 Premier League appearances.

Spartak Moscow trolls Manchester United and Bayern Munich

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Spartak Moscow had taken a swipe at Bayern Munich for making a ‘childish’ offer to Liverpool to secure Sadio Mane.

The forward has already expressed his interest in leaving the club and the German giants, are among the leading contenders to sign him.

The Russian club has cut a figure for itself for ruthless and savage banter on social media. The admin of the club’s social pages throws hilarious punches and banter and this time around, Bayern Munich was the target.
