- Argentina cruised to victory over an underperforming Italy and claimed the inaugural La Finalissima title at Wembley
Argentina are the winners of the inaugural La Finalissima.
La Albiceleste beat Italy in the one-game at Wembley, thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez and Ángel Di María and Paulo Dybala.
The Argentinian side dominated the first half but ironically it was Italy who had the only attempts on goal in the first 20 minutes.
Giacomo Raspadori and Andrea Belotti both forced Emiliano Martinez in the Argentinian goal.
Argentina then ramped up their efforts, with Lionel Messi pulling the strings. Messi came close to unlocking the Italian defence on more than one occasion and eventually did when he set up Martinez for Argentina’s opening goal in the 28th minute.
Martinez then turned provider when he set up di Maria. Martinez broke away at the halfway line and tore down the pitch. He then fed di Maria who calmly and audaciously chipped Gianluigi Donnarumma to give Argentina a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Both sides started the second half in a more cagey manner, eager not to give away an early goal. Argentina had the first chance of the second half when di Maria was denied by a brilliant save by Donnarumma. The Italian keeper had to go diving to his right to stop the ball from nestling into the top corner. Minutes later, di Maria almost scored an absolute blinder. Messi’s corner found di Maria on the edge of the box and his first-time volley had to be punched away by Donnarumma.
Commentators described it as PlayStation football.
Giovani Lo Celso then had a chance to make it three but he scuffed his shot with the open goal waiting for him. Argentina never looked likely to concede as they comfortably saw out the rest of the half. They even added insult to injury when Paulo Dybala scored a third after the 90th minute. Messi again broke forward and was unlucky to lose the ball which Dybala picked up and placed into the corner.
