How did the Finalissima come about?

The unique match came about after UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding last year.

To celebrate the extension of their partnership, it was decided the champions of Europe would take on the champions of South America in a one-off game. The game will take place at Wembley at 8 pm CAT and will go straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes, SuperSport reported.

What has been the reaction to Finalissima?

Football fans can’t wait for the unique showdown, which will see some of the best players in the world playing for a new cup. Tickets went on sale in March for the game and were sold out in less than a week.

Why is Finalissima important to Giorgio Chiellini?

The Italian captain plays his last international game today after announcing his retirement earlier this year.

The 37-year-old Chiellini believes it will be a beautiful way to end his career by lifting a final trophy with the Azzurri. Italy are no strangers to lifting trophies at Wembley. Roberto Mancini’s side beat England in the finals of EURO 2022 and it was Chiellini who got to receive the trophy as captain of the side.

Giorgio Chiellini praises Lionel Messi ahead of Finalissima

While both sides boast incredible names in the squads, Chiellini is most excited to play against Messi, The Citizen reported.

“Argentina have exceptional players. It’s obvious that the first one who comes to your mind is Messi but the others around him are fantastic. Messi is a football icon. It’s not for me to say if he is the greatest of all time or not. It will just be a pleasure to play my last game for the national team against him.”
