Fans of Spanish club Atletico Madrid have removed Thibaut Courtois’ plaque outside their home stadium after it was incited by the club’s president.

Real Madrid won the tie courtesy of a Vinicius Junior second-half strike as Los Blancos won their 14th European cup in grand style.

SPORTbible reports that on Monday, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo had, rather controversially, told fans:

"If you want to remove Courtois’ plaque, go with an axe and shovel and remove it”.

And so some supporters obliged by getting rid of the small metal plate, with images emerging online.

Fabregas tips Courtois to win Ballon d’Or

Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas has placed Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on top of his list for the Ballon d'Or award.

The Spanish midfielder has earlier stated that the Ballon d'Or winner could be decided at the end of the UEFA Champions League game between Real Madrid and Liverpool, with Karim Benzema, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane on his initial list.

However, after the game, Fabregas changed his mind and now believes Courtois should be the man leading the Ballon d'Or debate.

Karim Benzema shares warm embrace with Kylian Mbappe

Sports Brief earlier reported that Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe joined up with the France national team on Monday ahead of their UEFA Nations League games.

Both players have been included in Didier Deschamps’ squad for a four-game mini-tournament in the coming weeks.

However, any chance of a frosty meeting between the pair was quickly dispelled on the first day of training ahead of the incoming matches.
