However, the captain of the Nigerian side William Troost-Ekong scored their own goal to restore Mexico’s lead and that was how it ended.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Peseiro praised his players for their impressive display, but admitted he was not happy with the result.

He said as per Complete Sports:

“In the first half Mexico was much better than us but in the second half I think we had more balance.
“I am not happy that we lost but I’m happy with the performance of my players because they showed character, especially after what Mexico did in the first half. I think in the second half there was an improvement.”

The Super Eagles Eagles will be in action in another friendly on June 2 when they will face Ecuador in New Jersey.

Peseiro set sights on winning AFCON 2023

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has disclosed that his major priority for Nigeria is to qualify for and then win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Ivory Coast.

It was the Portuguese' first training in charge of the team since he was appointed to take over from Augustine Eguavoen who failed to qualify the team for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 62-year-old expressed delight following his appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation and he particularly appreciated the team spirit of the boys in camp.

Shehu Abdullahi celebrates Cypriot Cup glory

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigerian international Shehu Abdullahi has won the Cypriot Cup with Omonia Nicosia and the Super Eagles defender has expressed delight.

His side were forced to play most parts of the game against Ethnikos Achnas with 10 men after Abdullahi received a red card as early as the fifth minute of the final.

The encounter ended 0-0 at regulation time, but Omonia eventually won the tie 5-4 on penalties to claim the prestigious title.
