  • Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa takes on Manchester City in a crunch title decided on Sunday, May 22
  • If Villa beat Manchester City and Liverpool beat Wolves on Sunday, the Reds will be crowned Premier League Champions
  • Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa stands to earn as much as £12million if they can upset the odds

Aston Villa stand to earn as much as £12million if results go their way on Sunday, May 22 in the Premier League’s final showdown.

Steven Gerrard’s side, in an interesting twist of fate, hold the key to Liverpool potentially winning the title as they take on Manchester City on the final day.

Liverpool will need to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers and hope their club legend Gerrard’s side can pull a miracle and hold off City for the Reds to clinch the title.

Ahead of the clash, Gerrard played down the significance of the fixture, although insisted his side would go for the win as is the case with any football match.

“We’ll go out at the weekend and give it everything we’ve got to try and get points for Aston Villa and our supporters,” he explained. “If that inevitably helps Liverpool, fantastic. But my priority is to try and get points for Aston Villa." Gerrard said as quoted by The Mirror.

The incentive

There is however a small incentive that could encourage Villa to go for the win, and it has nothing to do with Liverpool.

If Villa, who are currently in 14th place, manage a top half finish, the club stands a chance to receive £12million, but this would need other results to go their way.

A club stands to pocket as much as £3m for each place in the Premier League table, and such amounts can greatly help boost Aston Villa in the transfer market this summer.

Guardiola says winning Premier League harder than winning UCL

Meanwhile, Sports Brief reported of Pep Guardiola’s interesting sentiments that it was more difficult to win the Premier League than the UEFA Champions League.

The Spaniard has come under scrutiny following his inability to guide Manchester City to the Holy Grail since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in 2016.

The closest the former FC Barcelona coach has come to annexing the premier European club competition was last season when his Man City outfit lost narrowly to fellow Premier League rivals Chelsea.
