- Owner Sfiso Biyela confirmed that the club's status would not be sold to anyone no matter the price offered
- Richards Bay were previously called Thanda Royal Zulu and sold their DStv Premiership status to AmaZulu
Richards Bay FC are headed to the DStv Premiership, but fans have expressed concerns that the team may never get there.
The Natal Rich Boyz gained automatic promotion to the DStv premiership after winning the GladAfrica Championship.
Fans were concerned that history would repeat itself and that the franchise would be sold to another team looking to get into South Africa’s top flight.
Owner Sfiso ‘Jomo’ Biyela has allayed fears and told fans that the club would not be sold for any price, IOL reported.
"This club is not for sale. This is my club and there's no offer on earth that I could possibly consider. Therefore to anyone that's even dreaming about making an offer for this club, I can assure you now that you're going to be wasting your time," he said.
Why were fans worried about Richards Bay FC selling their status?
Before there was Richards Bay FC, there was Thanda Royal Zulu. The club were originally Benoni Premier United but they were bought out by a Swedish consortium who moved them to Richards Bay and renamed them Thanda Royal Zulu.
The KZN club would go on to have great success and, in 2017, won the GladAfrica Championship and the promotion to the DStv Premiership that comes with it. However, due to financial constraints, the owners put the club up for sale, Soccer Laduma reported at the time. AmaZulu, who were fifth in the first division, then bought the club’s top-flight status.
Thanda Royal Zulu remained in the first division until Jomo Biyela bought out the team and renamed it Richards Bay FC.
