  • Silly news reporting season has begun as the football season draws towards a conclusion on the South African front
  • This time, legendary former Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari was linked with a move to Soweto giants Orlando Pirates
  • This was on top of a supposed move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly as the former Inter and AC Milan player's career winds down

In a transfer rumour to end all transfer rumours on the South African football scene, former Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari was linked with a move to Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

Muntari, a former Inter and AC Milan player, is currently on the books of Ghanaian Premier League giants Hearts of Oak.

According to a Soccer Laduma article, reports in Ghana media also suggested that Egyptian giants Al Ahly were looking at acquiring his services. This is despite Muntari turning 38 in December.

An unnamed source told the publication

“Look, there have been several reports from Ghana about the supposed potential signing of Sulley Muntari with Pirates but as someone who is based here in South Africa and close to Pirates and familiar with how the club operates, I doubt if there is any truth to those reports.
"The Pirates I know wouldn’t sign a 37-year-old because as far as I know the club is building for the future and therefore is targeting players who are much younger than that."

The article continued that football agent Sipho Shaven had been approached for comment on the rumour. Shaven was reported a few years ago to have been looking for opportunities in South Africa for the player as his time in Europe came to an end.

Distancing himself from the link to Pirates, Shaven said:

“That is news to me, and I haven’t had any discussions with Pirates about that and therefore I would like to distance myself from those reports.”

Pirates currently has Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Ofori and uncapped striker Kwame Peprah on its books.

Black Stars goalkeeper saves and scores final penalty as Orlando Pirates reach CAF Confederation Cup semifinals

Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Ofori was the man of the hour in the shootout for Orlando Pirates in the CAF Confederations Cup on Sunday.

As reported Sports Brief, the 26-year-old played a crucial role as his South African outfit returned to winning ways following their first-leg defeat against Simba SC in Tanzania a week ago.

But Pirates recorded a last-gasp 1-0 victory in Soweto thanks to a headed goal from the former King Faisal forward in the second leg.
