  • Leading Ghana Premier League top scorer Franck Mbella's goal was the difference between the two sides in the matchday 27 fixture
  • The narrow win means the Porcupine Warriors stretch their lead at the summit of the league with 10 points, having played one game more than closest rivals Bechem United

Runaway Ghana Premier League leaders Asante Kotoko recorded a historic victory at the Sogakope Red Bull Arena when the Porcupine Warriors pipped West Africa Football Academy (WAFA) on Saturday afternoon.

Cameroon import Franck Mbella Etouga scored the solitary goal to hand the Porcupine Warriors all-three points in a keenly contested affair.

The Kumasi-based giants went into the matchday 27 league clash against the relegation-threatened WAFA on the back of two successive defeats.

But the league leaders needed a second-half strike from Mbella, the leading top scorer in the competition, to bring an end to their poor run of form.

The victory does not only consolidate their lead at the summit of the Ghanaian top-flight but most importantly ends their struggle on a ground which they had never won.

How did Asante Kotoko beat WAFA?

Fresh from their humbling 3-1 home defeat to Legon Cities, Kotoko knew they had to bring an end t their poor streak of form sooner rather than later.

Their work was cut out with the absence of key figures in the team compounded with history going against them in the fixture.

But Mbella netted his 18th goal of the season when he was put through on goal before rounding the goalkeeper to put the ball into the yawning net.

Legon Cities stun Ghana Premier League leaders Asante Kotoko

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana Premier League leaders Asante Kotoko suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Ghana Premier League.

Michel Otoo opened the scoring after he converted a beautiful penalty in the 18th minute.

The visitors doubled their lead ten minutes later courtesy of a wonderful striker by Hans Kwoffie.
