Former France international Laurent Blanc has been reported as a candidate for the vacant Nigeria coaching job.

The 1998 World Cup winner and former Manchester United player is in line to replace Augustine Eguaveon who was sacked after failing to qualify Nigeria to the World Cup.

The Nigerian Football Federation will have a technical meeting in the coming days to screen the names that have popped up.

Laurent Blanc has been out of work since leaving Al Rayyan in the United Arab Emirates.

The 56-year-old previously coached Bordeaux, the French national team and Paris Saint Germain.

Nigeria were close to naming Jose Peseiro coach of the Super Eagles before the Nations Cup in Cameroon following the sacking of Gernot Rohr, but the move failed in the eleventh hour.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Amaju Pinnick who is the president of the Nigerian Football Federation has stated clearly that it will be nice for Portuguese coach José Peseiro to make a return to the Super Eagles.

Before the sacking of Gernot Rohr last year December, the Nigerian Football Federation named José Peseiro as the substantive head coach for the Super Eagles.

However, the football chiefs decided to give former international Eguavoen the chance to lead the Super Eagles to Cameroon for the 2021 African Cup of Nations.

Super Falcons suffer friendly defeat to Canada

Super Falcons of Nigeria in the early hours of Saturday, 9 April, suffered a 2-0 defeat against hosts Canada in the first leg of their two-legged friendly encounters.

The Nigerian national female team were without Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala who has been stripped of her captaincy, and in her absence, strong defender Onome Ebi wore the armband.

Falcons started the encounter impressively in the first half and looked more promising even though they were unable to find the back of the net against the Canadian team.
