Body of late CAF Doping Officer, Dr Joseph Kabungo, who died after Nigeria's World Cup play-off against Ghana in Abuja has been returned to his family in Zambia.

Dr Kabungo died moments after the game at the Moshood Abiola stadium following a cardiac arrest.

In a video posted on Twitter, spotted by Sports Brief, the family, members of the Zambian Football Federation were at the airport to receive his body.

A woman, who is believed to be the wife of the doctor is seen wailing and crying and the other people try to console her.

Dr Kabungo was the doping officer on duty that day and after the game he was spotted in his office struggling for breath.

Attempts to resuscitate after he was rushed to the hospital proved futile, as he lost his life in the line of duty.

Earlier that day, there were reports he was run over by fans following the violence that erupted after the match.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Nigeria Football Federation has denied reports making rounds that irate fans attacked a CAF official after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the World Cup, Soccernet reports.

Doctor Joseph Kabungo of Zambia was said to have passed away shortly after the FIFA World Cup play-off match between Nigeria and Ghana at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Nigeria’s dreams of participating at the World Cup were shattered and irate fans stormed the pitch to vandalise properties, fuelling rumours that the Doping Control Officer for the match was attacked.

CAF official dies after Nigeria-Ghana game

The Confederation of African Football's Doping Officer for the game between Ghana and Nigeria, Dr Joseph Kabungo has died after violence erupted at the end of the match in Abuja.

Dr Joseph Kabungo, a Zambian medical practitioner, is reported that have lost consciousness after he was beaten and stepped on as fans try to make their way out of the stadium due to stampede.

In a post on Twitter by British-Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, his death was confirmed after he was rushed to the hospital.
