Former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has congratulated Senegal and Egypt after their gruelling battle during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The two African football heavyweights faced off during the final of the tournament on Sunday, February 6, at Olembe's Paul Biya Stadium.

The epic clash had to be settled via the shootouts after 120 minutes of action that saw either side fail to find the winner.

Senegal eventually won it 4-2 in the shootouts with Sadio Mane firing home the decisive spot-kick that saw his side crowned champions.

Zidane shares his feelings on AFCON final

Zidane, who led Real Madrid to three Champions League titles described the Sunday encounter as 'an intense’ game.

The Frenchman, who was clearly impressed with the clash further took time to congratulate the two teams for their performance.

“120 intense minutes of football and fair play,” Zidane posted on Instagram.

“Congratulations to Senegal and congratulations to Egypt for their performance," he added.

Egypt's chance to revenge against Senegal

Meanwhile, despite their AFCON heartache, Egypt have a perfect chance to revenge against Senegal in the coming weeks.

The two titans are scheduled to face off in the FIFA World Cup play-offs billed to take place in March.

The winner of the two-legged fixture will be one of the five countries that will represent Africa in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year.
