Jamie Carragher has castigated Egypt’s coaching decision to select Mohammed Salah as the Pharaohs fifth penalty taker as the Pharaohs lost to Senegal in the AFCON finals Complete Sports reports.

Egypt and Senegal could not be separated after 120mins with the AFCON final dragged into penalties to decide the continent’s title winners.

The Liverpool forward was scheduled to take Egypt’s final spot-kick but would eventually not get a chance after Egypt missed two of their penalties with club teammate Sadio Mane sealing victory for Senegal in the shoot-out.

Carragher in a post on twitter has now slammed that decision by the Egyptian technical crew insisting Salah should have been allowed to take the first kick.

Senegal declares national holiday to celebrate AFCON win

Meanwhile, Senegal President Macky Sall has declared Monday February 7, as public holiday to celebrate the country’s victory at the African Cup of Nations.

The Teranga Lions won their first ever AFCON trophy thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory over seven-time winners Egypt with Sadio Mane scoring the final kick to seal the win.

According to a report via Punch, President Sall, who had been due to visit Comoros at the end of a trip that took in Egypt and Ethiopia, cancelled the last leg in order to welcome the triumphant Lions on their return to Dakar.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Senegal are the winners of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations staged in Cameroon.

The Lions of Teranga stunned Egypt 4-2 on post-match penalties to win the continental showpiece.

The thrilling match played at Olembe's Pau Biya Stadium had to be decided via the shootouts after both teams settled for a goalless draw in regulation time.
