Named after the beautiful Wikki Springs located inside Yankari National park, just a few kilometres away from the greater Bauchi metropolis, Wikki Tourist FC has a fascinating story.

Wikki Tourist's history

Wikki tourist was formed in 1992 due to football-loving citizens from Bauchi State located in the north-eastern part of Nigeria making presentations to the then Government for a need to establish a state football team.

Despite dominating the state level football scene, Wikki Tourist is a viable contender in its own right on a national level. They made history for the first time in 1998 when they won the AITEO Cup, Nigeria's oldest Cup Competition.

Despite being relegated twice, in 2010 and 2013, the team emerged as the winner of the country's second-tier football competition Nigeria National League in 2011. Then, finally, they were promoted back to the main league NPFL.

What is Wikki tourist nickname?

The north-eastern Nigeria giants are usually referred to as the Giant Elephants. The name was introduced due to the fact that elephants were always present at Yankari National park.

The team's current stadium is Abubarkar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, located in the metropolis of Bauchi. The 15,000-seater capacity stadium is famous for being one of the 8 venues that hosted the 2009 FIFA-under 17 World Cup.

Early 2021, the players were involved in a nasty road accident on their way to a match. Luckily, no one was hurt in the experience.

Who is Wikki Tourists captain?

Barely four seasons in, with Giant Elephant, Idris Mohammed Guda was handed the captainship of the team when the then captain Abdullahi Musa left for Kano Pillars at the start of the 2018/19 season.

The humble young captain has seen the team through a time when they were battling relegation and has even trialled for Nigeria's U-20 but did not make the cut due to high competition.

Despite its rough tides, the team has produced some notable players, with the most famous one being Patrick Paschal, who is now the chairman of the Bauchi State Football Association.

Who Owns Wikki Tourists?

The team is wholly owned by the Bauchi State Government and managed by a secretariat established by the Government. The secretariat is headed by Hon. Balarabe Yusuf.

Giant Elephant's Achievements and trophies

Besides dominating the state level football scene where the team has 13 State FA cups which range from 1998 to 2019, Wikki Tourists also have made a mark on the national level football.

  • In 1998 they won the AITEO Cup, Nigeria's equivalent of the FA Cup.
  • In 2011, After being relegated the previous year, 2010 emerged as winners of Nigeria's National League NNL. This made them be promoted back to the NPFL.
  • On the NPFL, on the other hand, the best performance they have ever recorded was finishing third for the season 2016/17.

Wikki Tourists FC's World ranking

The team made three appearances on the second-tier continental competition CAF confederation cup in 1998, 2008 and 2017 but got eliminated on the group stages. The team has put up an impressive performance in the recent past that they might get back on the international football scene once again.
