FootballSAFA President Danny Jordaan Urges Premier Soccer League Clubs to Finally Form Women's Teams
- South African Football Association Danny Jordaan president said it was high time that local professional football teams establish women's sides
- Currently, only Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy have female teams among clubs in the Premier Soccer League
- CAF recently turned up the heat on teams on the continent which did not have such outfits, threatening to ban them from continental competitions until they rectified this
It has taken what feels like forever, but a bigwig in local football has urged the country's established clubs to get with the programme they are far behind in.
South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan urged professional teams in the country to establish women's teams within their clubs. Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy are the only teams in the Premier Soccer League to have a women's side.
As reported in on TimesLive, Jordaan said that it was high time that South Africa conforms with progressive football trends.
He added:
“As we said, if our clubs want to be truly global and they want to be compared with the best in the world, then they must look at the models of other clubs around the world. Big clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Bayern Munch and many others have men's and women's teams."
HeraldLIVE detailed how local teams would be in a pickle if they did not have a women's outfit, as CAF confirmed that they would not be allowed to participate in future competitions if this was still the case.
Sports minister Nathi Mthethwa fully backs CAF's ruling, hinting to giants like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to prioritise women's football, according to KickOff.
Mthethwa said:
"I would like to applaud CAF in relation to their club’s licensing conditions in relation to taking into account the growth of women’s football by indicating that all recognised men’s clubs as for this year 2022 will be required to have a female team in their set up in order to participate in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cups."
