Nigeria’s ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan, has commended the Super Eagles for continuing their superb form at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, Daily Post reports.
Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong scored a goal each as Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 to maintain their 100 per cent record at the continental showpiece.
Augustine Eguavoen’s side won all their three group games defeating the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 in their opening game, before recording a 3-1 victory over Sudan in their second match.
And following their latest win over Guinea-Bissau, the Eagles announce their arrival in the knockout phase of the competition with their intentions clear.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan took to social media to commend the squad, urging them to sustain the momentum as they chase for a fourth continental title.
Jonathan wrote on Facebook:
“Well done Nigeria Super Eagles for advancing to the knockout stage of #AFCON2021 tournament in Cameroun with exemplary 100% performance.
“This is a clear demonstration of the Nigerian resilient spirit and knack for winning.
“I wish the Eagles more victories in the games ahead and urge them to sustain this momentum as we aim for the ultimate prize.”
Egypt through to Round of 16
Meanwhile, the Pharaohs of Egypt are through to the knockout phase of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon defeating Sudan 1-0.
Having lost their opening fixture to Nigeria, the Pharaohs picked up a win against Guinea-Bissau in their second game, before defeating Sudan 1-0 in their last group game.
