Experienced referees Peter Waweru and Gilbert Cheruiyot are among more than 60 match officials selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate the 33rd edition of the continental showpiece.

The two made their first appearance in the competition on Monday, January 10, when they took charge of a Group C fixture pitting Comoros vs Gabon Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaounde-Cameroon.

Waweru, who also doubles up as a Pure and Applied Mathematics lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Technology was the centre referee during the clash, with Cheruiyot assisting him.

The tie saw Gabon stun Comoros who are making their debut in the tournament, with Aaron Boupendza scoring the only goal of the match that separated the two teams.

The Panthers, who were without a number of their key players including Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a quiet start to the game before they slowly grew into it.

Boudpenza handed his side the lead in the 16th minute, with neither side finding the back of the net for the remainder of the encounter.

The win has Gabon topping the pool alongside Morocco who also stunned Ghana in their own fixture.

Salima Mukansanga becomes first female AFCON referee

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Salima Mukansanga is in line to ink her name in history books ahead of the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The 34-year-old is set to become the first-ever female referee at the continental showpiece after being selected among the match officials for the tournament.

GiveMeSport reports Mukansanga is part of the FIFA International Referees List - qualifying her to officiate at the international level.
