Deane headed the ball past Peter Schmeichel of Manchester United for the first goal in PL history in front of a boisterous Bramall Lane crowd. A long throw by Carl Bradshaw was deflected right into Deane's hands for the game-winning goal.

Next, Deane, only 19, widened their lead in the 50th minute. Mark Hughes, a Welsh winger, scored shortly after that. Dave Bassett's Sheffield United won 2-1 despite a furious second-half comeback. Deane has played for several international clubs, including Leeds United and Middlesbrough of the EPL, Benfica of Portugal, and Perth Glory of Australia.
