Gambia's Gina Bass surged to victory in the women's 100-meter final at the 2023 African Games held in Accra, Ghana.

Despite not leading out of the starting blocks, the 28-year-old sprinter showcased remarkable speed, overtaking Maia Alyse McCoy from Liberia and Nigeria's Olayinka Olajide to claim the gold medal.

This achievement marked an upgrade from her silver medal finish in the previous edition of the multisport event.

Executing a powerful sprint, Gina made a stunning comeback from behind, ultimately crossing the finish line as the fastest African woman at the African Games.

Her impressive time of 11.36 seconds secured her the top spot on the podium, per African Games.

According to The Point, Maia Alyse McCoy from Liberia secured second place with 11.49s, while Olayinka Olajide from Nigeria clinched the bronze medal with 11.55s.

Regrettably, Mary Boakye of Ghana couldn't match the crowd's enthusiasm, finishing in a disappointing seventh position with a time of 11.71 seconds.

Emmanuel Eseme wins gold in men's 100m final

Meanwhile, Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme Alobwede showcased a stunning performance in the men's event, securing the gold medal in the men's 100-meter final, as reported by Sports Brief.

Despite a sluggish start, the 30-year-old Eseme surged forward to clinch victory, with Nigeria's Itsekiri Usheoritse finishing second and Namibia's Gilbert Hainuca in third.

Demonstrating exceptional speed, Eseme surpassed his semi-final performance, crossing the finish line in first place with an impressive 10.14 seconds.
