Athletics Kenya had a disappointing outing at the just-concluded World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

Kenya won only one medal, with Beatrice Chepkoech running a national record in the 3,000m to claim bronze on the second day of the championships.

How Kenya performed at Glasgow 2024

Chepkoech finished third behind surprise winner, Elle St.Pierre of the United States, who beat race favourite, Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay. St.Pierre clocked a championship record of 8:20.87, while Tsegay used 8:21.13. Chepkoech was further back in 8:22.68.

The other Kenyan in the race, Teresiah Muthoni, was ninth with a season's best of 8:38.96.

Athletics Kenya sent a team of 12 athletes for the three-day championships, with Africa's fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, headlining the list.He agonisingly failed to make it to the men's 60m, finishing fourth in a race won by American, Christian Coleman.

In the 800m, Collins Kipruto and Noah Kibet did not even make it to the finals, failing to make it out of their heats. The two finished third in their respective heats, but their times were bettered by other third-placed qualifiers.

In the women's 800m, Naomi Korir was eliminated in the heats, while Vivian Chebet reached the final but could only manage a fourth-place finish. Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma won the race.

Vincent Kibet could only manage a 10th-place finish in the men's 1,500m final. New Zealander, Geordie Beamish, won the race with a personal best time of 3:36.54.

Kenya's 4 by 400m relay team similarly failed to make it to the podium places, finishing fourth in a race won by the defending champions, Belgium. Kenya's quartet, comprised of Zablon Ekwam, Wiseman Were, Boniface Mweresa, and Kelvin Tauta, broke two area records on the same day, however.

In Belgrade 2022, Kenya had one more medal (silver) than in Glasgow.

Where does Kenya rank?

Kenya, therefore, finished joint-27th in the final medal table ranking. The Jackson Tuwei-led federation will likely not be too worried about the results ahead of the Paris Olympics.

The African nation has never been a dominant force in the indoor championships, with her last gold medal coming way back in 2014 when Caleb Mwangangi won the men's 3,000m.

World Indoor Champs: final medal tally

The USA once again reigned supreme, accumulating six golds, nine silvers, and five bronzes. Ethiopia was the highest-ranked African nation, with two golds, one silver, and one bronze.

The next edition will see athletes return to Poland at the Torun Arena in 2026. It will be the country's second time hosting the championships after the 2014 edition in Sopot.

Kipruto wins Tokyo Marathon

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported that Benson Kipruto won the Tokyo 2024 marathon in a course record time. Kipruto bested Eliud Kipchoge's previous record by running a time of 2:02:16.

Kipruto led a 1-2-3 Kenyan finish, with Kipchoge surprisingly managing only a 10th-place finish. The former world record holder will be hoping to make amends in Paris later this year.
