Super Eagles star, Victor Boniface, has won a top Bundesliga award ahead of an ex-Barcelona midfielder and a Chelsea player on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

The Nigerian international has been one of the best players in the German top flight this season, leading Bayer 04 Leverkusen to their first league title.

The 23-year-old won four consecutive Rookie of the Month awards upon his arrival at the BayArena last summer and has clearly impressed the powers that be.

Boniface was nominated for the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award along with Ian Maatsen, who is on loan at Dortmund from the Blues, and Xavi Simons, who is on loan at RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain.

Another player nominated was TSG Hoffeinhem's Maximillian Beier.

The winner was determined by a voting system, with Boniface crowned the outright winner thanks to his 13 goals and nine assists for Leverkusen in the league this season.

The Nigerian star's first season in the Bundesliga has been successful, both on the pitch and title-wise.

According to a report by Soccernet, he is also leading Die Werkself's treble charge with 20 goals and 10 assists in 32 appearances in all competitions.

Leverkusen still have two more trophies to fight for this season: they will face Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final on May 22 before taking on FC Kaiserslautern in the finals of the DFB-Pokal three days later (May 25).

Lookman edges Boniface in CAF POTY ranking

Sports Brief earlier reported that Ademola Lookman edged Boniface in the race for the CAF African Player of the Year after an outstanding run with both club and country.

The 26-year-old Nigerian starred as Atalanta reached their second final of the year following their victory over Olympique Marseille in the Europa League semi-final.

Lookman scored once and also provided an assist in the 3-0 win in Bergamo, setting himself up favourably to succeed Victor Osimhen as the continent's premier footballer.
