  • Norah Jeruto, a former Kenyan, won gold in the 3,000 metres women's steeplechase final at the ongoing World Athletics Championships
  • Jeruto, who now represents Kazakhstan, ran a dominant race to floor, among others, the reigning Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai
  • World U-20 champion Celiphine Chespol finished 13th as questions continue to linger over Kenya's bad performance

Team Kenya's poor showing at the World Athletics Championships continued on Thursday morning as her only representative Celiphine Chespol finished a disappointing thirteenth in the 3,000 metres women's steeplechase.

Chespol was the only athlete flying Kenya's flag in the final after all her compatriots failed to make it to the finals. The defending champion and world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech failed to make it entirely to Oregon.

Chespol, who is a two-time World U-20 Champion in the races, got the going tough in the senior races. It was an even bitter experience for Kenyan fans as Norah Jeruto, a former Kenyan now turning out for Kazakhstan, bagged gold.

It was a dominant performance from Jeruto, who literally led the race from start to finish to set a championship record of 8:53:02. Ethiopians Werkuha Getachew and Mekides Abebe finished second and third, respectively.

Another former Kenyan, Winfred Mutile Yavi, stumbled in that last lap of the race to finish fourth.

It is back to the drawing board for Kenya, which was hoping to win a fourth title in the races that began in 2005.

In the medal standings, the Republic of China moved above Kenya after Feng Bin won her first world discuss title to take China's gold tally to 2. Kenya is now fourth with one gold, three silver and two bronze.

In Africa, Kenya lies second behind Ethiopia who have so far amassed three gold, four silver and one bronze. The United States leads the overall standings.

Kenya's next opportunity to win medals will come on Sunday morning in the 800 metres men's final and 5000 metres women's final. On Thursday, all Team Kenya representatives in the races made it to the semifinals.

Athletics Kenya now blames Ferdinand Omanyala for delayed visa

Sports Brief had earlier reported how the saga surrounding the delayed visa of Ferdinand Omanyala is far from over. Athletics Kenya has now released an official statement that has appeared to transfer the blame on the 100 metres sprint superstar.

Omanyala competed in the 100 metres races at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA. However, the build-up to the event was shrouded and still is shrouded in controversy.

Two days to his first race, Omanyala took to social media to bemoan his lack of a visa. He got his visa within just 24 hours to the Friday race. He arrived in Oregon less than three hours to his race and all the obstacles notwithstanding, he managed to qualify for the semifinals.
