  • George dropped a hint about his future as Nigeria's interim coach

Nigeria caretaker coach, Finidi George, has dropped a huge hint about his future in the Super Eagles set-up ahead of their friendly clash against Mali on Wednesday, March 27.

George was appointed as interim coach as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues to look for Jose Peseiro's successor.

Under George, the Super Eagles registered a massive 2-1 win over their bitter rivals Ghana on Friday, March 22. It was their first match since losing the 2023 AFCON final to Ivory Coast in February, per BBC.

The 1994 AFCON winner has been named as a potential head coach for the team alongside the likes of Emmanuel Amuneke and Pitso Mosimane.

George was part of Peseiro's backroom staff that led the Super Eagles to their first AFCON final in a decade. Ahead of the match against Mali, George unintentionally spoke about his future.

"We cannot at this time be dwelling on the injuries and absences that we have to cope with. Our intention has always been to win these two matches and then look forward to the World Cup qualifiers in June. We are determined to keep up the momentum and sustain the winning mentality derived from beating the Black Stars,” he said via Soccernet.

George probably knows he could still be in charge of the national team after the club season is over. The Super Eagles face South Africa and Benin in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.

Will he get the permanent role?

Iheanacho wants George to stay

Sports Brief earlier reported on Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho weighing in on George's stint as Nigeria's interim coach.

The FA Cup winner praised George, saying he hopes the former Ajax star stays in his role for a while.

Adepoju lauds George

Sports Brief also reported on former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju congratulating Finidi George on his appointment as Super Eagles interim coach.

Adepoju lauded his former teammate and sent him his best wishes as he auditions for the role of Nigeria's head coach.
