His godfather and close relative, legendary Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, played baseball for the Boston Red sox. Gregg followed in his godfather's footsteps and began playing baseball. Speaking to the Boston Globe, he recounted his early playing days, saying,

"Growing up in Nothern New Jersey, elementary school days, I played baseball but the area was not a hotbed for baseball compared to soccer. In seventh grade I chose soccer and stopped playing baseball."

In 2020, the close connection between Gregg and his brother, Jay Berhalter, landed them in trouble. Jay, who served as the United States Soccer Federation's Chief Commercial and Strategy Officer was accused of nepotism after the federation appointed his brother, Gregg, to head the national team in 2018.

The family legacy has been kept alive by MLS midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, Gregg Berhalter's son. The centre-back defender's 18-year-old career began in 1994 when he left the UNC Tar Heels to join Eredivisie's PEC Zwolle. He later admitted the risk his decision carried in an interview with USsoccer, saying,

“I knew at the time I wanted soccer to be my life. Looking back, at the time I did choose a risky path, deciding to leave college early to go to Europe.”

After spending over a decade playing in Europe, Gregg finally returned to the American League after signing a contract with LA Galaxy. Two years later, Galaxy renewed his agreement allowing him to take up coaching duties and become one of the best football players turned coaches.
