Sports Brief looks at the potential opponents for the new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.

Five superstars who could challenge Rhodes

Dominik Mysterio

It may seem far-fetched for Dominik to be thrust into the title picture, but it makes a lot of sense at the moment.

The Judgement Day are looking to grab all the gold they can in the company, and with Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley already holding world titles, why not Dirty Dom?

With the WWE Draft approaching, Dom could end up on the blue brand and, therefore, be in a prime position to take on Rhodes.

The 27-year-old has already held the NXT North American title, and deserves to be involved in a title storyline on the main roster.

AJ Styles

The Phenomenal One turned heel before WrestleMania 40 and could be a worthy opponent for Cody Rhodes.

Like The American Nightmare, Styles was also a member of the famed Bullet Club in Japan, and WWE could play on that factor for their potential feud.

The former world champion recently admitted that he is edging closer to retirement, but admitted that he wanted one last memorable story before he did, GiveMeSport noted.

"I'm anxious to see what story comes next. I'm getting close to the end. I want to have that story and match to go with it before I leave the WWE. That's what I'm looking forward to the most," he said.

Gunther

The longest-reigning Intercontinental champion of all time has finally been dethroned.

Gunther held the IC title for a record 666 days, proving he is a future main-event superstar.

Many felt it was just a matter of time before the Austrian got a run at a world title, especially given his performances in the Royal Rumble, and this could be the perfect time to pull the trigger on that.

The upcoming draft could also position him perfectly to take on The American Nightmare next.

Brock Lesnar

The Beast Incarnate last competed in the WWE at Summerslam 2023, and his last feud was against Rhodes. He could pick up where he left off if he returned to the company.

A wrestler of Lesnar's stature doesn't start from the bottom when he returns, so when and if he does, it will be for a big storyline.

Rumours have been building that the founder of Suplex City will return to the company at some stage, so his randomly showing up to challenge the new champion isn't too out there.

Triple H also touched on Lesnar's status within the company at WrestleMania, saying he was still part of the WWE.

Randy Orton

Many believed Orton's career was over after he underwent back surgery, but The Viper returned at Survivor Series in 2023, in better shape than ever.

While he is a baby face now, the multi-time champion is one of those superstars who people cheer for even when he's the bad guy.

Orton and Rhodes also share a long history, so a battle between them would make sense.

The Viper was The American Nightmare's mentor in the group, Legacy, and now got to watch him lift his first world title.
