Some of its top legends include The Undertaker, John Cena, Hulk Hogan, and The Rock. So, when did the WWF become the WWE, and why did WWF change to WWE? The entertaining company was founded as Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC) in 1953, then became the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in April 1963. WWWF was later re-branded to WWF in 1979 before settling for WWE.

The company's name changed from WWF to World Wrestling Entertainment in 2002. It was then branded with the initials WWE in 2012. The entity has grown to become the largest professional wrestling promotion globally. Some WWE superstars have also starred in several movies and TV series.

Why did WWF switch to WWE?

Legal issues between the company and the World Wildlife Fund forced the sports entertainment firm to re-brand to WWE. The World Wildlife Fund sued them for using the WWF logo in the UK. To avoid further arbitration, Vince McMahon, the majority owner of the wrestling corporation, agreed to have the name changed.

Did WWF and WWE exist at the same time?

The two existed at different times. World Wrestling Federation lasted for 23 years between 1979-2002, while it is 21 years since it changed to WWE from 2002-date (2023).

Vince McMahon, who inherited the business from his father, reportedly sold the company to Endeavor Group Holdings Inc. in 2023. McMahon had the majority of company shares (48.09%), while Linda, Shane, Stephanie McMahon, and Paul Levesque (Triple H) had a combined ownership of (55.31%).

Endeavor Group will now have 51%, while WWE stakeholders own 49%. WWE also merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) parent company to create a $21.4 billion sports entertainment entity.

"For decades, Vince and his team have demonstrated an incredible track record of innovation and shareholder value creation, and we are confident that Endeavor can deliver significant additional value for shareholders by bringing UFC and WWE together." Endeavor CEO Ariel Emanuel said.

Nick Khan is the CEO of the entity. He replaced McMahon's daughter, Stephanie McMahon, who resigned from her as chief in January 2023. Vince McMahon serves as the executive chairman.

Many WWF wrestlers left to join the World Championship Wrestling (WCW), a rival company founded by Ted Turner in 1988. Veteran WWF stars who joined in the '80s and '90s, like The Rock, The Undertaker, Kane, Triple H, and Shawn Michaels, continued participating in the competition even after re-branding.

The legendary Buddy Rogers was one of the pioneers of the professional wrestling competition. He won the first championship in April 1963 after defeating Antonino Rocca. Others included Bruno Sammartino, Andre the Giant, and Bret Hart.
