- Justin Gaethje defeated Dustin Poirier to win the BMF title on Saturday night
- Fans took to social media to praise ‘The Highlight’ for his knockout victory
- Fans debated on who Gaethje should fight next in the Octagon
Justin Gaethhe is the UFC’s new BMF champion.
The 34-year-old captured the ceremonial title in style, knocking out Dustin Poirier with a highlight-reel head kick in the second round.
It was a sweet victory for Gaethje, who avenged a TKO loss to Poirier back in 2018.
Fans took to social media to praise Gaethje for his brutal knockout win.
Gaethje channels Edwards in win
Many of them said that his finishing move was similar to the one Leon Edwards used to beat Kamaru Usman in their welterweight championship fight last August.
Coincidentally, that bout also happened at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Gaethje threw out a right jab to get Poirier’s attention. He quickly followed that punch with a high head kick, catching Poirier flush on the right side of his head.
One fan said Poirier and Usman’s fall is almost identical.
Teddy Atlas said the only difference in the knockouts by Edwards and Gaethje is one was Southpaw and the other was Orthodox.
Gaethje's next opponent
Fans were wondering who Gaethje will fight next after his win over Poirier. Some argued that he should fight Islam Makhachev next for the UFC lightweight title.
‘The Highlight’ stated that himself after the win against Poirier, saying that he wanted a shot at the UFC lightweight championship next.
Makhachev is set to defend his title this coming October 21 against Charles Oliveira at UFC 294, per ESPN.
One fan said Makhachev or Oliviera would not want to fight this version of Gaethje.
