Carlos Alcaraz made history on Sunday, becoming the third-youngest player to win the Wimbledon title, doing so at the age of 20 years and 72 days.

The Spaniard did it the hard way, beating 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller.

Apart from winning the prestigious Gentlemen's Singles Trophy, he also got to take home a huge cash prize.

Sports Brief looks at the Wimbledon prize money and how it compares to the three other Grand Slam tournaments.

2023 Wimbledon Prize Money

The total prize fund for the 2023 Wimbledon Championships amounted to £44.7 million ($56.6 million), which is a record for the tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz and Marketa Vondrousova benefited from that pot as this year’s singles champions each received a cheque for £2.35 million ($2,741,726), per The Independent.

That is a 17.5 percent increase compared to the amounts Novak Djokovic and Elena Rybakina received 12 months ago for winning Wimbledon’s singles events.

Losing the final was tough for both Djokovic and Ons Jabeur, but they each still ended up £1.175 million ($1,370,863) richer for their efforts at SW19.

Losing semifinalists in the singles events received £600,000 ($700,015), while the losing quarterfinalists got £340,000 ($396,675).

The champions in the men’s and women’s doubles events were also paid handsomely, with each pair receiving £600,000 ($764,460) from the All England Club.

The mixed doubles champs got £128,000 ($163,084) for winning Wimbledon this year.

2023 Australian Open Prize Money

The total prize pot for the 2023 Australian Open amounted to AUD $76.5 million (£43.3 million). That tally marked a 3.4 percent increase compared to last year.

Singles champions Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka each received a cheque for AUD $2.975 million (£1.683 million).

Losing the final was a bitter pill to swallow for both Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rybakina, but they each still ended up AUD $1,625,000 (£919,811) richer for their efforts in Melbourne.

Losing semifinalists in the singles events received AUD $925,000 (£523,377), while the losing quarterfinalists got AUD $555,250 (£314,144).

The champions in the men’s and women’s doubles events also were paid a lot, with each pair receiving AUD $695,000 (£393,267).

The mixed doubles champions got AUD $157,750 (£89,275) for winning the Australian Open this year.

2023 French Open Prize Money

The total prize fund for the 2023 French Open amounted to €49.6 million (£43.06 million). That tally marked a 12.3 percent increase compared to 2022.

Singles champions Djokovic and Iga Swiatek each received a cheque for $2,496,039 (£2,004,759), per Sporting News.

Losing finalists Casper Ruud and Karolina Muchova received $1,248,019 (£1,002,380) for their efforts in Paris.

Losing semifinalists in the singles events got $683,698 (£549,130), while the losing quarterfinalists received $434,094 (£348,654).

The champions in the men’s and women’s doubles events also were paid lots of money, with each pair receiving $614,231 (£508,445).

The mixed doubles champions got $132,399 (£106,339) for winning the French Open this year.

2023 US Open Prize Money

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has yet to announce the total prize fund for this year’s US Open.

It surely will be bigger, though, compared to 2022, when they awarded more than $60 million in player compensation.

Each round in last year’s event saw an increase in the amount of prize money awarded.

Singles champions, Alcaraz and Swiatek each received $2.6 million for winning the US Open last year.

Losing finalists Ruud and Jabeur received $1.3 million for their efforts in New York.

Losing semifinalists in the singles events received $705,000, while the losing quarterfinalists got $445,000.

The champions in the doubles events (men’s, women’s, and mixed) also were given huge amounts of cash, with each pair receiving $688,000 for winning the US Open last year.
