Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner booked their spots in the third round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships after recording convincing wins on Wednesday.
They won their respective second-round matches in straight sets.
Djokovic needed two hours and 28 minutes to record a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over Jordan Thompson.
Djokovic’s serve hurts Thompson
The 23-time Grand Slam champion blasted 40 winners and won 88 percent of his first serve points against Thompson, per ATP.
That helped Djokovic in this matchup, as his return wasn’t able to hurt Thompson’s serve.
Djokovic won just 32 percent of his receiving points against the Australian, with the No. 2 seed converting two of his five break-point opportunities.
The Serb is looking to win his eighth Wimbledon title. The Calendar Grand Slam is once again in his sights after he won the Australian Open and the French Open this year.
Sinner beats Schwartzman
Sinner advanced to the third round after beating Diego Schwartzman 7-5, 6-1, 6-2, per Reuters. The Italian star needed just two hours and two minutes to secure the second-round win.
The 21-year-old recorded 38 winners and won 81 percent of his first-serve points against Schwartzman.
He won 47 percent of his receiving points against the Argentine, with Sinner converting six of his 10 break-point chances.
Sinner’s best finish at Wimbledon came last year when he reached the quarterfinals. He nearly recorded a major upset, losing in five sets to Djokovic in an epic duel.
Fritz, Kostyuk record comeback wins
