Alcaraz powers past Chardy

The reigning US Open champion blasted 38 winners and won 84 percent of his first serve points against Chardy, per ATP.

What proved to be the difference in the match, however, was the Spaniard’s return.

Alcaraz won 52 percent of his receiving points against Chardy, with the No. 1 seed converting seven of his 14 break-point opportunities.

He also recorded 10 aces and committed just 14 unforced errors in the opening round.

Murray passes Peniston test

Murray started his Wimbledon campaign with a bang, needing just two hours and one minute to record a comprehensive 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 win in the first round, per ESPN.

The 36-year-old put on a show in front of some special guests as eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer and the Princess of Wales watched in the Royal Box.

Murray won nine consecutive games spanning the first, second, and third sets to take control of the contest.

He was far from perfect in this match, as he recorded more unforced errors (24) than winners (21). Murray was solid, though, when attacking the net, winning all 17 of his points there.

He will next face either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem in the second round.

Djokovic and Swiatek start strong

Sports Brief recently reported on Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek’s matches in the first round of Wimbledon.

Djokovic booked his place in the second round with a 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Pedro Cachin.

Swiatek also secured his spot in the round of 64 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lin Zhu.
