FootballWimbledon Give No. 1 Seeds to Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, Djokovic No. 2
- Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek were given the No. 1 seeds for this year’s Wimbledon
- The All England Club adhered to the current rankings of the ATP and WTA Tours
- Seven-time Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic will be the No. 2 seed this year
The All-England Club has released the seedings for this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
To no one’s surprise, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek were the players given the No. 1 seeds in the Men’s and Women’s Singles events, respectively.
Wimbledon seedings follow the rankings in the ATP and WTA Tours, thus the reason why Novak Djokovic is not the No. 1 seed this year, despite winning the event seven times.
Queen's win boosts Alcaraz's seeding
Alcaraz overtook the 23-time Grand Slam champion atop the men's standings on Monday after winning the grass-court tournament at Queen’s Club over the weekend, per ESPN.
The Spaniard benefited from Djokovic not playing any tune-up events on grass before Wimbledon.
Despite falling to No. 2 in the seeding, Djokovic remains the odds-on favorite to win the third Grand Slam event of the year. He has won the last four Wimbledon championships.
Medvedev and Sabalenka return
The Serb did not benefit from a ranking boost, however, from his win last year, after the ATP and the WTA decided to withhold all points for Wimbledon in reaction to the All-England Club banning players from Russia and Belarus because of their invasion of Ukraine.
Players from Russia and Belarus can see action once more at Wimbledon this year, including Daniil Medvedev, who is seeded third in the men’s draw, and Aryna Sabalenka, who is the No. 2 seed in the women’s field.
The draw to set up the men’s and women’s singles brackets will be held on Friday. The tournament then starts on Monday.

She will look to add the Wimbledon title to her growing collection of Grand Slams. She has yet to reach the quarterfinals at the All-England Club, per Eurosport.
Djokovic makes history
Sports Brief recently reported on Djokovic becoming the newest member of the Triple Career Grand Slam club.
He joined Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, and Margaret Court on that exclusive list.
