The Kenyan rugby community is in sorrow following the passing of former Kenya international George Obonyo Adul, who died on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, in Mombasa.
Ray Dawa, a former player and Chair of Mombasa Sports Club, announced that Adul would be laid to rest on January 5, 2024, at their farm in Mtwapa, Kilifi.
Dawa highlighted the family's financial challenges, appealing for support to settle the hospital bills and cover the funeral expenses, amounting to Ksh5 million.
"He faced a health challenge and was hospitalized, accumulating a hospital bill of Sh4 million. We are now organizing a fitting sendoff," Dawa is quoted by The Nation.
Adul played a significant role in the 1990 Kenya Cup-winning Mean Machine squad and contributed to Mombasa RFC's 1997 Enterprise Cup victory.
Known for his intelligent play at fullback and powerful kicking, Adul represented Kenya Sevens in 1992 and Kenya Simbas from 1992 to 1993.
Having honed his rugby skills at the renowned Lenana School, Adul pursued Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nairobi, graduating in 1993.
Adul’s death comes four months after KRU announced the death of Kenya Lionesses player Bernadette Olesia.
Olesia passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, while receiving treatment in hospital, as reported by The Star.
She worked at the Shamas Rugby Foundation and played club rugby for the Northern Suburbs Ladies Team and Shamas Rugby Foundation.
