The Rugby World Cup is the most prestigious competition in world rugby, with the best national teams from across the globe competing for the title every four years.

Since the inaugural competition in 1987, the Rugby World Cup has produced four different champions in nine editions.

Sports Brief looks at the countries with the most World Cup wins as the 2023 edition heads into the knockout stage.

South Africa (3 titles)

The Springboks are tied with New Zealand for the most Rugby World Cup titles in the history of the event.

South Africa captured the championship in 1995, 2007, and 2019.

They went unbeaten in the 1995 edition, winning all of their six matches to claim their first world title.

The Springboks’ showing in the pool stage wasn’t that impressive, beating Australia, Romania, and Canada by a combined 42 points.

They stepped it up a notch in the quarters, beating Western Samoa 42-14.

The Springboks had to work hard in the semis, beating France 19-15 to secure a spot in the final.

South Africa needed extra time to win the title in the final, defeating New Zealand 15-12 in a thriller.

The Boks waited 12 years to win their second championship, taking home the crown in the 2007 edition.

They crushed the competition in Pool A, beating England, Tonga, Samoa, and the United States by an average of 35.5 points.

South Africa eased past Fiji in the quarters and defeated Argentina in the semis to set up a mouth-watering final showdown with defending champions England.

The 2007 Rugby World Cup final was a low-scoring affair, with the Boks pulling off a 15-6 victory over England.

The Springboks’ 2019 campaign didn’t start according to plan, as they lost to two-time defending champions New Zealand in the opener.

They finished strong, though, winning each of their last six matches to capture their third Rugby World Cup title.

They defeated host nation Japan 26-3 in the quarters to set up a mouth-watering semis clash with Wales.

They edged past the Dragons 19-16 in that contest to book a spot in the final.

South Africa crushed England 32-12 in the championship match to bring home the coveted Webb Ellis Cup, per The Guardian.

New Zealand (3 titles)

The All Blacks are tied with South Africa for the most Rugby World Cup titles in the tournament’s history.

New Zealand won the championship in 1987, 2011, and 2015.

They went undefeated in the 1987 edition, winning all of their six matches to capture their first world title.

The All Blacks dismantled the competition in Pool 3, beating Italy, Fiji, and Argentina by an average of 52 points.

They continued their excellent play in the knockout stage, beating Scotland 30-3 in the quarter-finals, crushing Wales 49-6 in the semis, and defeating France 29-9 in the final.

New Zealand waited 24 years to win their second crown, taking home the title in the 2011 edition.

They went unbeaten in the pool stage, winning their four matches against France, Tonga, Canada, and Japan by an average of 47.8 points.

New Zealand eased past Argentina in the quarters and defeated rivals Australia in the semis to set up a mouth-watering final clash with France.

The championship match was a low-scoring affair, with the All Blacks pulling off a thrilling 8-7 win over France, per the BBC.

They successfully defended their title in 2015, going undefeated in the tournament once more.

New Zealand defeated Argentina, Georgia, Tonga, and Namibia in Pool C by an average of 31.3 points.

The All Blacks continued their strong play in the quarters, crushing France 62-13. They edged past South Africa 20-18 in the semis to book a final showdown with Australia.

They outclassed the Wallabies in the championship match, with New Zealand recording a 34-17 victory.

South Africa vs. Tonga Betting Preview

Sports Brief recently previewed the World Cup match between South Africa and Tonga.

The Springboks had their eight-match winning streak in the World Cup snapped last Saturday with a 13-8 loss to Ireland.
