The former Springbok captain returned to the headlines after playing his part in the fight against crime. He was caught on tape chasing down and apprehending a shoplifter in the town of Paarl outside Cape Town last month.
The 44-year-old de Villiers told Sport24 that he saw the man slipping chocolates into his bag in The Boer & The Butchery, before making a run for it. After he caught the thief, de Villiers brought him back to the premises.

"We are very grateful for Jean's actions. It was quite a thing when a former Springbok rugby captain arrived with the thief."
According to IOL, de Villiers said:
“When I said ‘hey’ he looked around and started running. Then I just said to myself ‘I must also run now and I chased him across the road towards Home Affairs, with my slops and sunglasses coming off. There is always a queue at Home Affairs and he bumped into a guy and I was able to secure him."
Streaking Bok fan hammered by security
A Springbok supporter probably regrets whatever temporary insanity that enveloped his mind in August.
The man was seen streaking on the Mbombela Stadium field in Nelspruit last Saturday during half-time of South Africa's 26-10 demolition of New Zealand in the Rugby Championship opener.

FootballThe TikTok video then showed him being tackled brutally by security, before being hauled away for what must have been a cold and unpleasant night in Mbombela.
For Springbok assaulted in Mbombela
Former Springbok player Grant Esterhuizen was assaulted outside an Mbombela nightclub in August.
The incident allegedly happened following South Africa's 26-10 demolition of New Zealand in a Rugby Championship Test match. Images on Facebook showed him lying on a hospital bed with a bruised face.
The 44-year-old Esterhuizen represented South Africa in seven Test matches during the 2000 season.
