Tragic details are starting to emerge about the death of an Australian rugby player in Barcelona.

Liam Hampson, a player for the Redcliffe Dolphins was discovered dead by staff of a nightclub in the Spanish city, who then alerted the police.

Hampson, who played in Australia's Rugby League, was on holiday with friends, who are also rugby players. They were touring Europe and were currently in Spain.

As reported by Marca, Hampson was reported missing by friends, with his last known location being the nightclub.

His friends took to Instagram to spread the word about his disappearance, noting that they last saw him 39 hours before that. They also shared photos of the player in the clothes he was last seen in.

The Daily Mail reported that Hampson's body was found on a patio in an out-of-bounds area of the club.

Management believed that Hampson became lost in the club and used an emergency exit to leave. He scaled a wall in the darkness, believing it was a way out.

He then plunged 14 metres to his death, landing on the patio which was located in an area generally not in use. He was eventually found by staff members over 30 hours later.

Visagie and Gelant were in Hermanus when the tragedy happened. The National Sea Rescue Institute released a statement detailing what happened while local police also opened an investigation into the incident.

They were swept off a harbour wall by strong waves on Sunday afternoon, Sports Brief reported.
