  • The battle lines have been drawn for this weekend's headline United Rugby Championship clash between the Stormers and Bulls in Cape Town
  • The social media teams of both storied arch-rivals fired good-natured jibes at each other while stoking the fires of another much-anticipated North-South derby
  • There is a bit of recent history of this tactic, though it did backfire spectacularly on the Tshwane side in January

The DHL Stormers and Vodacom Bulls have started the mind games ahead of Saturday's crucial Vodacom United Rugby Championship match in Cape Town.

The great arch-rivals of South African rugby bantered with each other on Twitter as anticipation grows for the clash. There is a bit of history when it comes to jibes between the two ahead of a North-South derby.

The Bulls Twitter account tweeted a video of Stormers fans who were fed up with their team's poor run of form in January. Tongue-in-cheek, the video encouraged them to switch allegiances from the Cape Town-based side to the one in Tshwane.

This appeared to motivate the Stormers, who marched into Loftus Versfeld to pull off an upset 30-26 victory over the hosts. The result re-ignited their season, seeing the team rattle up the log standings.

This was still fresh on the Stormers' social media team's minds today, choosing violence by referencing the ill-fated tweet.

The Bulls' team could not be outdone, firing back with their own riposte.

The in-joke is about the Stormers' controversial victory over Ulster two weekends ago, while the Bulls saw off the Irish side relatively comfortably last Saturday.

Kick off for the match will be at 2pm on Saturday, 09 April. The match will be broadcast on SuperSport 211.
