Nigeria had a gold rush on day three of the 2024 All-African Games, which propelled the team to the top five on the medals table after an impressive outing from the wrestling team.
After three days of competition in Ghana, a gold medal from badminton and six gold medals from the wrestling event ensured the country moved up to fourth in the medals table.
According to The Cable, Anuoluwapo Opeyori won Nigeria’s first gold medal in Ghana after beating compatriot, Godwin Olofua, 2-1 in the final to defend his men’s singles title in the badminton event.
In the wrestling event, three-time Commonwealth champion Adekuoroye Odunayo, Mercy Genesis, Christiana Ogunsanya, Esther Kolawole, Blessing Oborududu, and Hannah Reuben all clinched gold medals for Team Nigeria.

Nigeria has now won a total of 26 medals so far in the games, comprising of seven gold, seven silver, and 12 bronze medals to place fourth in the standings behind leaders Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa.
Igali impressed with Nigeria’s wrestlers
Meanwhile, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, has applauded the sensational performance of his wrestlers after they claimed six gold medals in one day, Punch reports.
The former Olympic Gold medalist predicted that Team Nigeria’s wrestlers, who he claims are currently the best on the continent, will win more gold medals at the African Games in Ghana.
Igali has also urged Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to reward athletes who excel at the games, just like they did for the Super Eagles after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Abeiku Gyekye Jackson won Ghana's first swimming medal at the 2023 African Games in Accra.
The 23-year-old defied the odds that were against him as he claimed the silver medal in the men's 50m butterfly event on Sunday.
Jackson finished closely behind Egypt’s Khalafalla Ali while also surpassing Jaden Eaton from South Africa with a time of 24.23 seconds.
