The earliest known game of softball was played in 1887 between Harvard and Yale students in Illinois. Reporter George Hancock was credited with inventing the game's first ball and bat. The official governing body for softball in the world is called the World Baseball Softball Federation.

Softball positions and roles

The game consists of ten positions arranged in a diamond structure. Here is a breakdown of softball positions and what they do:

1. The Pitcher

This is the individual who throws the ball towards the batter from the middle of the pitch. Unlike baseball pitchers who pitch overhand, softball pitchers have to pitch the ball with an underhand movement.

2. The Catcher

The catcher is responsible for catching the ball in the strike zone if the batter does not hit. He is usually in a squatting position behind the home plate.

3. First Baseman

The primary task of the first baseman is to stay in position to prevent anyone from achieving a first base play. The first baseman is positioned on the right side of the batting player.

4. Second Baseman

The second baseman plays in between the first and second base. The job assigned to this position is covering off that area of the pitch if the ball is hit there.

5. Shortstop

The Shortstop is in charge of recovering all the balls hit between second and third base. The position is called shortstop because it is designed to deal with balls that have been hit short.

6. Third Baseman

The third baseman's role is similar to that of the first baseman, with the difference being that this position is on the opposite side of the home plate.

7. Right Fielder

As part of the outfield, the right fielder covers the far side between the 1st and second base; This position requires a player with a strong arm as they tend to field the ball from the furthest corner of the pitch.

8. Center Fielder

The center fielder is positioned in the middle of the outfield. This role involves a lot of coordination with the other outfielders to figure out how best to field for specific pitchers and the best spots to position themselves.

9. Left Fielder

The left fielder is positioned behind the third baseman, and whoever is in the position covers the far end of the diamond on that side.

10. Designated player

The designated player hits in place of one of the players in the starting lineup. This is very similar to the designated hitter in baseball.

What are the most recruited softball positions?

The most recruited softball positions are the pitcher and shortstop positions. This is because these positions require the most skill and athleticism, and a good pitcher and shortstop can be the difference between being a decent team and being a championship contender.

Softball at the Olympics

Softball made its Olympic debut at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The sport ran in the 2000,2004 and 2008 editions of the Olympics before being scrapped in 2011. It was reintroduced for a one-off appearance in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics. It will not be part of the schedule at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but it is expected to be included in the 2028 Olympics set to be held in Los Angeles.

Softball may not get as many global plaudits as its more esteemed counterpart, baseball, but it is growing in popularity in the United States and Canada. Softball is an easy and enjoyable game to learn because its positions and roles are clearly defined.
