Remco Evenepoel’s bid to win the 2023 Giro d’Italia suffered a massive blow on Wednesday when he crashed twice in Stage Five, the first of which was caused by a stray dog.
The unfortunate canine encounter happened 151 kilometers from the finish line, with the errant dog making its way into the peloton.
Evenepoel and teammate Davide Ballerini had to swerve to avoid the careless dog, resulting in the pre-race favorite falling off his bike.
No harm was done to Evenepoel, who was able to remount and rejoin the peloton after the crash.

Second crash injures Evenepoel
Stage Five took a turn for the worse for Evenepoel after he crashed for the second time near the end of the race, per Cycling News.
The Belgian got caught in a separate collision with 1,500 meters of racing to go on the final run into Salerno.
Evenepoel wasn’t lucky this time, as he suffered multiple injuries following the second crash.

Soudal-QuickStep team doctor Toon Cruyt said, “things looked good for Remco” after his first crash.
The second crash caused plenty of damage, with Cruyt saying Evenepoel “has a lot of pain on his right side.”
Cruyt explained the injuries Evenepoel picked up in Stage Five, saying he “has a big haematoma with a muscle contraction.” He added that the Belgian rider also had some problems with his sacrum.
Cruyt feared the Naples stage on Thursday would be difficult for Evenepoel.

FootballEvenepoel wasn’t the only big name to crash on Wednesday. Mark Cavendish went down heavily during the closing sprint, with the British rider taking fourth place after he slid across the finish line.
