Commonwealth Games: Duné Coetzee and Rebecca Meder Among Team South Africa’s Last Medal Hopes in the Pool

The aquatics events at the Commonwealth Games comes to an end today, and Team South Africa will be looking to bag some medals on the final day.

The pool has been a happy hunting ground for the country, with the women in particular impressing.

It’s South Africa’s women who will have a chance to shine again on the final day.

Duné Coetzee will compete in the final of the 400m Freestyle after finishing fourth in her heat earlier today. Coetzee, who swims for the University of Georgia’s team in America, will face tough competition from the Australian contingent. The Aussie swimmers dominated the heats and will be looking to do so in the final again.

South Africa will also be represented in the Women’s 50m Backstroke final. Rebecca Meder will be flying the flag high for the country in the final after securing her place in the heats earlier.

Team SA will also compete in the Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay final tonight, the Commonwealth Games website confirmed.

The country’s Men’s team were also due to compete for a place in the final of the 4x100m Medley Relay, but only three of the four competitors arrived at the pool for the heat. Without a fourth member present, South Africa were not allowed to compete in the event.

Commonwealth Games: Lara van Niekerk and Tatjana Schoenmaker lead the way as Team South Africa win more medals

South Africa's swimmers once again dominated in the swimming pool today.

Team SA grabbed gold, silver, and bronze thanks to Lara van Niekerk, Tatjana Schoenmaker, and Pieter Coetzé.

Van Niekerk stole the show in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke event as she beat her teammate, Schoenmaker, to the gold medal. Australia's Chelsea Hodges bagged a bronze as the South Africans dominated.
