He is a Scottish and Macedonian-born son. Lesley is his mother, while Chris is his father. He was raised in Unionville, Ontario, along with his sister Sarah, and represented the Markham Waxers in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association's Eastern AAA Hockey League (OMHA).
During one of his seasons with the North York Canadiens, he played alongside P. K. Subban, who is currently playing in the NHL. In minor hockey, he won eight OMHA championships in a row. In March 2006, he also helped his Waxers team win. In addition, he participated in the 2003 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.
