He joined the Western Hockey League's Prince Albert Raiders at the young age of 17. He was transferred to the Kelowna Rockets in time for the 2015 World Junior Championships, where he and his group won the competition. He played in 19 games, scoring 28 points, and was awarded MVP. In 2015, Leon Draisaitl won the Stafford Smythe Trophy as the Memorial Cup MVP.

He realised his NHL ambition with 108 points for the Raiders and appearances for the German National Team at both the U-20 and senior levels. The Edmonton Oilers selected him with the third overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. On October 9, 2014, he formally amended his three-year deal with the group.
