The broadcaster was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was raised in Marlboro Township, New Jersey, Colts Neck Township, Louisiana, and Marlboro, New Jersey, where he attended Marlboro High School.

The media personality was the top player on the golf team and co-captain of the basketball team when he was in high school. His club was the Bamm Hollow Country Club.

He later transferred to the University of Houston in Texas, where he majored in broadcasting and competed for the men's golf team there. He shared a bedroom with Blaine McCallister and Fred Couples, both of whom developed to become professional golfers.

He received his first experience in sports reporting while working for the CBS Radio Network. At the time he used to send Win Elliot taped interviews for his Sports Central USA weekend reports.

Beginning in the early 1980s, he worked as an anchor and sportscaster for KHOU in Houston, Texas, before transitioning to a weekend sports anchor position at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City (1982–1985). Later, in 1985, he joined CBS Sports, where he first served as a studio host for the network's coverage of college football and basketball, as well as an on-course reporter for the PGA Tour and NFL games on Westwood One.

Media appearances

As part of changes to the long-running game show to use product placement models and CBS crossovers, including sports packages, he has appeared on episodes of The Price Is Right to present a Showcase prize that involves CBS Sports properties, one to attend 2009 Final Four in Detroit and another in 2010 for Super Bowl XLIV (with Phil Simms).

In the 1996 movie Tin Cup, Jim Nantz appeared as himself. He has also made appearances in episodes of Arliss, Yes, Dear, Criminal Minds, and How I Met Your Mother (season 5, episodes 14 and 15, season 9, episode 24). In addition, in the brief-lived television series Clubhouse, he played the announcer for a fictional baseball team; you can also hear him in the 1998 movie Scrapple.

After 26 years of marriage, Nantz divorced Ann-Lorraine "Lorrie" Carlsen Nantz in 2009. The then Connecticut couple had a daughter, Caroline, now a broadcaster. Publications reveal that Nantz's ex-wife is entitled to alimony and child support payments of $916,000 per year. Nantz acknowledged having dated a 29-year-old lady prior to the divorce's finalization.

He later wed Courtney Richards on June 9, 2012, at Pebble Beach Golf Links' seventh tee. Jim Nantz and his current wife have a son and a daughter.
