The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, hosted the continent-conquering D’Tigress at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja.
The Nigerian national women’s basketball team defeated Senegal 84-74 in the final of the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tournament to emerge as champions for the fourth consecutive time.
After twelve years without any trophy, D’Tigress were winners in 2017 and have followed up with victories in 2019, 2021, and now 2023.
The team returned home to a warm reception from the wife of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who disclosed that their performance on the basketball court is a testament to hard work, discipline, and commitment.
The statement said, via Arise News:
“Your victory transcends sports, symbolizing the potential that can be realized when a diverse group of individuals come together with a common goal.
“I am immensely proud of your achievements and the positive image you have projected for our country. Your success reinforces the fact that Nigerian women are capable of reaching the highest level in any endeavour they choose to undertake.”
The captain of the side then presented the prestigious FIBA Women’s Afrobasket trophy to the First Lady, the wife of the Vice President, and the wife of the Senate President.
Some officials of the Basketball Federation also presented a medal and jersey to the First Lady.
Giannis Antetokounpo visits Nigeria
Sports Brief earlier reported that NBA superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo had a great time in Nigeria after visiting Lagos with his mother.
The Milwaukee Bucks player, who was born to Nigerian parents in Greece, took the opportunity to visit the West African nation as he continues to trace his ancestry.
Antetokounmpo also engaged with aspiring basketball players in Lagos, giving them lessons on the basics of becoming an NBA star.
